Coffee seeds made their way to Java from India in 1696, but the first attempt was unsuccessful as the initial plantings were destroyed by flooding. A second attempt came in 1699 when cuttings from Ceylon were brought over by a man named Hendrik. The exact timeline for when coffee planting began in Sumatra is unclear. For over a century after the Ceylon cuttings arrived, Java reigned as the coffee capital of Indonesia (then known as the Dutch East Indies), with little significant coffee production occurring on other islands. Even into the 20th century, much of the coffee produced in Indonesia was still referred to as Java.
Coffee is cultivated in the northern highlands, particularly in areas like Tapanuli, Aceh, and Gayo, as well as further south in Lintong, close to Lake Toba, which is one of the deepest lakes in the world. While Mandheling refers to a group of people from northern Sumatra, much of the coffee from that region carries their name. Most coffee in Sumatra is grown at elevations between 2,500 and 5,500 feet, and nearly all of it is produced by smallholder farmers. In fact, nine out of ten coffee farmers in Sumatra cultivate coffee on less than one hectare of land. Almost all Sumatran coffee undergoes a wet hulling process, known locally as “giling basah.” The plant species include the Bergandal and Sidikalang varieties of Typica, Hibrido de Timor (also called “Tim Tim”), a Bourbon cultivar known as Linie S, as well as S-288 and S-795 found in Lintong, along with Rambung, Abyssinia, “USDA,” Caturra cultivars, and Catimor lines.
Aceh Gayo green coffee beans, originating from Indonesia, are a premium variety known for its exceptional quality. These beans are highly sought after, thanks to their unique characteristics, rich flavor, and a host of health benefits. The Aceh Gayo region, nestled in the highlands of Sumatra, boasts the perfect conditions for coffee cultivation, with its cool, humid climate, nutrient-rich volcanic soil, and impressive altitude.
Sumatra Mandheling coffee is a type of Arabica that hails from the Mandailing region, nestled near the stunning Bukit Barisan Mountains in North Sumatra. The local climate and soil conditions are just right for growing coffee plants, thanks to the rich volcanic soil and an elevation of over 1500 meters above sea level. This unique environment creates the perfect setting for cultivating top-notch coffee beans.
Sumatra Lintong Coffee Beans, named after the Lintong Nihuta district in Northern Sumatra, are celebrated for their outstanding quality and distinctive flavor profile. This coffee, classified as Lintong Grade 1, showcases the best traditional Arabica beans grown in the area. Let’s take a closer look at the remarkable characteristics, specifications, and production details of this exceptional coffee.
A peaberry is a unique coffee bean that comes from a single coffee cherry, unlike the typical two half-beans you find in most cherries. Interestingly, only about 5-7% of any coffee crop consists of peaberry beans. ul taste!

Robusta Lampung Coffee has a rich and strong aroma, and the coffee is incredibly full-bodied, almost syrupy. It lingers on the tongue with a long, clean aftertaste.
FREE FROM ANIMAL CRUELTY.
Our Luwak coffee sourced from wild plantations is regarded as more ethical since the civets roam freely in their natural environment and handpick the finest coffee cherries.
This coffee is the priciest in the world, thanks to its unique production process involving the excretion of wild Luwak. These animals instinctively choose the best coffee cherries, which contributes to the coffee’s exceptional flavor. The magic happens in their intestines, where enzymes and fermentation work together to create a truly distinctive taste. Plus, with only a few hundred kilograms produced each year, it’s incredibly rare and hard to come by!
